If my first book, Cats and Coconut Oil in Costa Rica was the story of finding my way to Costa Rica, then Under The Trees in Costa Rica is the story of learning how to belong. And somehow, I have the feeling the forest is not quite finished with me yet…
Beschrijving
Somewhere deep in the Costa Rican jungle, beneath a canopy filled with monkeys, snakes, ants and trees that seem to breathe at night, I made a spectacularly questionable decision: I decided to build a life there.
In “Cats & Coconut Oil in Costa Rica”, I shared my story of spending years torn between wanderlust, animal welfare work, fibromyalgia and the growing feeling that the life I had built was slowly draining the joy out of me. Costa Rica first appeared as an escape, a place where I could finally breathe again, but what I did not realise at the time was that it would completely change the course of my life.
In this second book of the Under The Trees in Costa Rica series, I take you far beyond the dreamy Instagram fantasy of moving abroad and into the wonderfully chaotic reality that followed after I decided to stay and build a home in one of the most authentic, least touristy corners of Costa Rica.
What came next was a collision between tropical paradise and rural reality involving collapsing plans, impossible bureaucracy, missing building materials, armed insects, dramatic neighbours, opportunistic wildlife, sideways rain and a dirt road apparently designed by someone with a personal vendetta against suspension systems.
With humour, honesty and the occasional emotional meltdown, this book is a story about rebuilding, unexpected friendships and finding peace in the middle of absolute tropical chaos. Because sometimes the dream life does not arrive looking polished and peaceful. Sometimes it arrives covered in red dust, carrying a machete, followed by three rescue cats and a battalion of ants
